Andrea T. Shandell joined BBB National Programs in November 2020 as Vice President, Privacy Initiatives, Operations. BBB National Programs fosters trust, innovation, and competition in the marketplace through the development and delivery of effective third-party self-regulation, dispute resolution and other programs. BBB National Programs is the home of industry self-regulatory and dispute resolution programs that include the National Advertising Division, National Advertising Review Board, BBB EU Privacy Shield, BBB AUTO LINE, Children’s Advertising Review Unit, Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, Children’s Confection Advertising Initiative, Direct Selling Self-Regulatory Council, Digital Advertising Accountability Program, and the Coalition for Better Advertising Dispute Resolution Program. 

Ms. Shandell formerly provided legal, counseling, compliance and training services to Gannett Co., Inc., a news media and marketing services company, on behalf of the Law Department in the areas of privacy, data security, consumer protection, litigation, ethics, compliance and circulation law, most recently as Gannett’s Associate General Counsel and Chief Ethics and Privacy Office.

In her in-house capacity, Ms. Shandell was active in several professional and media associations including News Media Alliance, Digital Content Next and Association of Corporate Counsel. Ms. Shandell regularly speaks at continuing education events on topics of privacy, data security, litigation management and marketing compliance.

Prior to providing services to Gannett, Ms. Shandell was a trial lawyer, mostly representing personal injury litigants. In addition, she taught at the University of Maryland in its Paralegal Studies program. Ms. Shandell also edited a book on medical malpractice litigation.

Ms. Shandell graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and from Duke University School of Law. She is admitted to the bars of Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. She is a Certified Information Privacy Professional.
