Mary Engle leads policy efforts, oversees the work of the National Advertising Review Board and Digital Advertising Accountability Program, and provides strategic guidance for 20+ industry self-regulation programs.
Mary K. Engle is Executive Vice President, Policy, at BBB National Programs, where she leads policy efforts across the organization’s 20+ industry self-regulation programs, oversees the work of the National Advertising Review Board and the Digital Advertising Accountability Program, and provides strategic oversight of the Center for Industry Self-Regulation. A frequent speaker on the topics of independent industry self-regulation, advertising, and privacy, Mary also serves as Vice President of the International Council for Advertising Self-Regulation, of which BBB National Programs is the U.S. representative.
Ms. Engle joined BBB National Programs in 2020, following a 30-year career at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). At the FTC, Ms. Engle held several management positions, including Associate Director for Advertising Practices (2001-2020). While at the FTC, she played a lead role in developing the FTC’s policies on green marketing, advertising substantiation, influencer marketing, native advertising, online disclosures, health-related advertising, child-directed marketing, enforcement of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, alcohol advertising, and video game marketing.
Ms. Engle was awarded the Presidential Meritorious Executive Rank Award in 2012. Before joining the FTC, she practiced law with a litigation firm in Washington, DC. Ms. Engle received her B.A. from Harvard University and her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.
