CFBAI and CCAI Publish the 2023 Annual Report on Participant Compliance and Program Progress

Dec 19, 2024 by Daniel Range, Vice President, Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, BBB National Programs

BBB National Programs has released the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI) and Children’s Confection Advertising Initiative (CCAI) 2023 Annual Report, which includes findings on CFBAI and CCAI participant compliance with their commitment to not engage in advertising directed to children under age 13 or to advertise only foods or beverages that meet CFBAI’s Uniform Nutrition Criteria. The report notes excellent compliance by the 22 CFBAI participants and the six CCAI participants in 2023.

The report also discusses modifications to CFBAI’s Core Principles—which in 2023 included expanding the scope of children covered by participants’ commitments—and developments in the child-directed food advertising landscape, which in 2023 saw fewer products being advertised to children by CFBAI participants and fewer participants directing any food or beverage advertising to children at all. This reduction in child-directed food and beverage advertising by CFBAI participants was reflected in CFBAI’s 2023 Product List and the results of an assessment of food and beverage advertising on children-focused television networks.

For over 15 years, CFBAI has focused on ensuring that participants meet their commitment to helping improve the children’s food and beverage advertising landscape. BBB National Programs encourages non-participating food, beverage, and restaurant companies to join CFBAI and CCAI program participants in that work.
