Protecting Child Influencers

August 20, 2024

It is not uncommon to hear that a child wants to be a content creator, making a living by sharing their hobbies, likes, and interests with a following on a social media platform like YouTube. For those child influencers who have made it, it is also common for part of that content creation to be through a paid partnership to market a product, creating a lucrative business model.

In this episode of In the Sandbox with CARU, host Rukiya Bonner speaks with pocket.watch’s Julia Moonves as well as former Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARU) attorney, Angela Tiffin, now counsel at pocket.watch, about the business of child influencers. Together, they break down the state laws protecting these young stars including both the Coogan law and the new Illinois child influencer law, the role of a parent in the business, and the special considerations that come into play when working with a young creator.
