DSSRC Administrative Closure #38

DSSRC contacted a direct selling company about five social media posts disseminated by its salesforce members. The subject social media posts came to DSSRC’s attention pursuant to its independent monitoring of advertising in the direct selling marketplace. Specifically, DSSRC expressed concern that four of the Facebook posts conveyed unsubstantiated product, health and wellness benefits that the Company’s direct selling products can protect against COVID-19.

The first four Facebook posts contained generic support immune system claims but added that by taking the Company’s products you can best protect yourself from COVID-19 and boost your immune system. The fifth Facebook post indicated that the Company’s product can help treat/cure autism in children.

With respect to the COVID-19 related posts, the Company attempted to contact the responsible distributors in order to have the posts removed. Additionally, the Company contacted the distributor responsible for the autism related post in order to have the post immediately removed. In addition to removing the posts, the Company also disseminated educational material to their distributors regarding the Company’s stance on any claims mentioned in connection with the sale of their products. This educational material has also been posted on their website and the Company informed DSSRC that they will continue to educate their distributors.

DSSRC expressed its appreciation to the Company for its efforts in removing the posts and its dedication to educating their distributors. As a result of the prompt actions taken by the Company, DSSRC administratively closed the inquiry.
