DSSRC Administrative Closure #82
DSSRC contacted a direct selling company regarding three Facebook posts disseminated by its salesforce members. The subject claims and social media posts came to DSSRC’s attention pursuant to its independent monitoring of advertising in the direct selling marketplace. DSSRC expressed concern that one of the social media posts communicated the message that the Company’s products can protect consumers against a number of health-related conditions including the COVID-19 virus. Additionally, DSSRC expressed concern about two posts regarding earnings claims which conveyed unsubstantiated expectations concern regarding the amount of income that could be earned by working at the Company.
More specifically, the first Facebook post contained claims that individuals could earn extra income during the coronavirus using their phone anywhere in the world and depicted a one-day total earnings total of $637.00. The second Facebook post contained a claim that one individual made almost $1,000 after 2 months during the pandemic from posting social media content on their phone and referred to the possibility of “life changing income”. Lastly, the third Facebook post suggested that the company’s product could boost the immune system, improve respiratory health, enhance memory, focus and cognitive function and relieve pain during the time of Covid-19.
In response to DSSRC’s inquiry, the company promptly removed all the social media posts within 72 hours after receipt of DSSRC’s inquiry letter.
Accordingly, based upon the prompt actions taken by the Company, DSSRC administratively closed the inquiry.
